The interview is your opportunity to present yourself as the best candidate for the position. By careful and considered preparation for the interview, you can maximise your prospects for new employment.
BEFORE THE INTERVIEW
• Do some background research on the organisation you are being interviewed by. Try to learn as much as you can about the company through brochures, media, and the internet. This will make you better prepared for the interview, and demonstrate to the employer that you have an interest in the company and the role.
• Ask your recruitment consultant to give you all relevant information regarding the interview. Inquire about the background and position held by the interviewer.
• You should also inquire about possible questions you will be presented with in the interview.
• If you are being interviewed by a panel, try to find out which member of the panel is primarily responsible for deciding who will be appointed.
• Consider the specific points you want to convey about your skills and experience, and try to cover all of these points during the interview.
• Have written confirmation of the interview date, time and place.
AT THE INTERVIEW
• Be punctual and allow for unexpected delays. The company may be interviewing a number of people, and being late may restrict the length of your interview and will reflect badly on you.
• Dress appropriately. Ask the consultant what is appropriate attire if you are unsure.
• First impressions are important, so smile, shake hands and make eye contact with your interviewer.
• Relax, be truthful and answer questions concisely.
• Ask pre-prepared questions about the company and the role. This will show the interviewer that you have an interest in the position.
• At the end of the interview, take a few minutes to summarise and reiterate your case. Recap on your major strengths, and your suitability for the position.
• Thank the interviewer. Ask when you can expect a response from the interviewing company.
